History

Nearly 100 Years of Service and Financial Strength

In 1913, four enterprising railroad employees decided that "passing the hat" no longer adequately provided financial security for an injured or disabled coworker. They formed a fraternal association, known as the Brotherhood of All Railway Employees, offering insurance benefits.

That small fraternal association grew quickly. Ten years after its founding, it became a mutual insurance company, managed for the benefit of its policyholders. The company was renamed Benefit Trust Life Insurance Company in 1963.

A New Life as Trustmark

In 1985, the company acquired mutual insurer EMBA, converted it to a stock company and renamed it Trustmark Life. The name Trustmark was subsequently adopted for the entire company in 1994.

Growing into the 21st Century

Trustmark strengthened its benefit administration capabilities through the 1997 acquisition of CoreSource, Inc., one of the country's largest employee benefit third-party administrators (TPAs). In 2001, Trustmark acquired leading worksite benefit firms National Worksite Benefits, Inc. (NWB) and National Worksite Advantage, Inc. (NWA). These acquisitions bolstered the company's national presence in the TPA and voluntary markets and advanced an overall strategy to diversify its portfolio of businesses beyond major medical insurance.

CoreSource acquired several select, independent TPAs, including, in 2002, Corporate Benefit Services (CBS), of Little Rock, Ark., and FMH Benefit Services of Overland Park, Kan. In 2006, CoreSource completed one of its largest acquisitions to date, purchasing St. Clair Shores, Michigan-based NGS American, Inc.

In 2008, Trustmark acquired Health Contact Partners, a URAC-accredited health call center and assumed Destiny Health's group health insurance business.

Trustmark strengthened its reach into the healthcare management market in 2010 by acquiring HealthFitness, an award-winning provider of integrated health and fitness management services.
